The MXL 770 is a small-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone. Its physical construction is described as solid, with a spacious internal cavity that makes it suitable for aftermarket modifications. The exterior features switches for a -10 dB pad and a high-pass filter, which cuts frequencies below 150 Hz. 

According to its specifications, the microphone has a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. A notable characteristic shown on its frequency graph is a significant boost of approximately 9 dB in the high-frequency range, centered around 9 kHz. 

Performance tests yielded the following observations: 

Plosives: 

The microphone is highly susceptible to plosives (strong consonant sounds like "p"). High-Pass Filter: 

When the high-pass filter is engaged, the removal of low-end frequencies makes the prominent high-frequency boost more apparent. 

Strengths: 

The microphone produces a tight low-end response and a clear mid-range that is not muddy. 

The review includes a direct comparison to the AKG P120, a microphone with a similar capsule size but a different high-frequency response. At the time of the review, the MXL 770 was priced higher than the AKG P120. 

The MXL 770's primary sonic characteristics are a very pronounced high-frequency boost, which can heavily emphasize sibilance, and poor plosive rejection. Its strengths lie in its tight bass and clear midrange. Its build quality and internal space make it a viable candidate for users interested in hardware modification.
